A journey with a difference.
Exploring historic living cities such as Damascus
and Aleppo, walking through the remains of Syria’s ‘Dead
Cities’, imagining Queen Zenobia at stunning
Palmyra – and then mixing with Syrians as we
dine locally most evenings, experiencing the very special
Haj train on the Mecca route with which Lawrence of
Arabia was familiar, dining with Bedouins under the
stars, bathing in sulphur springs near Palmyra, riding
in 4x4’s across the desert, taking a boat around
one of Syria’s most spectacularly-sited castles,
private receptions in historic, architecturally-stunning
environments, reception drinks on the castle roof at
Palmyra overlooking the site at sunset: this
is all just a little bit different. We
have planned it so.
From palaces and cities rising majestically in the
desert to Krak des Chevaliers and Saladin’s Castle ruling
the hillsides; from Early Bronze Age to the Ottoman
Period. We travel through time as we explore
this living museum called Syria. Whether we are
looking at the spectacularly-memorable Byzantine site
of St. Simeon or the majesty of the Bronze Age
site of Mari; experiencing temples, synagogues,
basilicas and mosques; enjoying the intriguing Crusader
and Muslim history linked to the Castles; or gently
strolling through colourful souqs – you will
experience throughout the journey the generous warmth
and hospitality of the Syrian people as you live the Spirit
of Syria.
Denise
Darbyshire (BA.Hons), a lecturer who also works with
the Department of Education at Oxford’s
Ashmolean Museum, is accompanied by an experienced
Syrian Guide and a Tour Manager, and will convey the Spirit
of Syria in a way not found elsewhere. Throughout
you will be able to explore the Syrian historical perspective. And
added to this will be an insight, based on Denise’s
own research, into cross-cultural dimensions embracing
Near Eastern history and legacy.
From beginning to end we think you will see the difference,
culminating in a personal invitation to travel to the
orchards outside Damascus where our local Agent and
her Syrian friends will prepare traditional Syrian
food for you. Relax and swim in the pool, listen to
the sound of the Oud ringing across the hillsides,
and mix with Syrian people. A different
kind of farewell. Traditional. Because
you are guests.
